ABSTRACT

This paper presents data about the demographics of disabled seniors in Canada and the range of economic, social, and environmental barriers which they confront. Issues are highlighted connected with the independent living paradigm, marginalization, and the multiple social problems of being elderly, disabled, female, and/or a member of a visible minority. The author then describes the implications for future action research, theory development, policy formulation, and social change.

IL rörelsen: en kort bakgrund

"IL rörelsen fick sin början på sent 60-tal, rörelsen förespråkade en filosofi som byggde på konsumism, oberoende, kamratstöd (peer counseling), medborgarrätt, arbete för sina rättigheter (self-advocacy) och ökad livskvalitet för personer med funktionsnedsättning. IL program utvecklades för att ge tjänster åt personer med omfattande funktionsnedsättning som var missnöjda med den reguljära medicinska rehabiliteringsvården. IL programmens filosofi innehåller bland annat konsumentmakt, kamratstöd, arbete för gruppens rättigheter (advocacy) och eliminering av miljömässiga, fysiska och sociala hinder i samhället."
