Scottish Disabilty Equality Forum

Misson and activities:

The Scottish Disability Equality Forum works for social inclusion in Scotland through the removal of barriers and the promotion of equal access for people affected by disability.

We are a membership organisation, representing individuals with any type of impairment, disability organisations and groups who share our values. We aim to ensure the voices of people affected by disability are heard and heeded.

SDEF promotes access in its widest sense: access to the built and natural environment and access to the same opportunities as are enjoyed by other people in our community.

Our non governmental, non-profit, organization works at the national level.

We consider ourselves as part of the international Independent Living and Disability Rights Movement.

Our organization is mainly run, controlled and represented by disabled people.

We have expertise, or are interested in cooperating with other organizations, in the areas of:

SDEF’s membership and services are open to individuals as well as organisations and therefore is representative of both:

SDEF’s focus is on access to the environment, to information and to developing mechanisms for two-way communication, as the fundamental determinants of access to services, benefits, rights and social inclusion;

SDEF aims to be accessible to all affected by disability and a centre for technical and practical expertise in the field of access and communication methods, which is directly informed by the experience of people with disabilities; and

SDEF welcomes the involvement of non-disabled people in its work, while insisting that people with disabilities should retain control.

SDEF is currently the umbrella body for access panels in Scotland

We may be able to refer disabled persons to wheelchair accessible housing or transportation or other services in our city.

We have traineeships or volunteer positions that people with disabilities are welcome to apply for.

People planning to come to our city are welcome to contact us to find out about accessibility and services in Stirling. We may be able to help with information.
