The association of paraplegics of Macva District is a humanitarian organization which gathers people with disability. The disability was caused either by the injury of the spinal cord or by a disease that caught it. As a result, the disabled are unable to walk, or find it difficult to walk. Consequently, the same are seated in the wheel chair.
The association was founded at Sabac, on March 3, 2000, and the same was registered on August 10, 2000.
Our mission is to involve the disabled in all social activities, through their active engagement, in order to improve living conditions of the same.
The association has 40 members who constitute the Association Assembly. There are 5 members in the Executive Board and 3 members in the Monitoring Board. The president and the administrative assistant are elected to the period of four years.
Our activities are as follows: 1) purchase of medicines, sanitary material and orthopaedic appliances, 2) support to the economically non-affluent members with disability, 2) elimination of architectural obstacles in municipal infrastructure, 3) campaigns for better communication between local community and the disabled, 4) educational lectures against prejudices to children in primary schools, 5) involvement of the disabled in the society through sports activities and cultural manifestations.
Our non governmental, non-profit, organization works at the local level.
We consider ourselves as part of the international Independent Living and Disability Rights Movement.
Our organization is 100% run, controlled and represented by disabled people.
We are highly experienced in implementing projects with respect to education of children in primary schools, between 10 and 13 years of age. The lectures are mostly informational the aim of which is to inform children about the potentials and needs of the disabled. The children actively participate in the discussion and raise various constructive and most honest questions. During the 45 min lecture, the children even try to manipulate the wheel chair and perform some basic operations such as switching off/on the light, opening the window etc. Having successfully implemented our pilot project, we are currently implementing the global project which includes schoolchildren in all primary schools in our town (about 1200 eleven year old children).
We are interested in cooperating with other organizations which work on the involvement of the disabled in all areas of social activities and improvement of life quality of the disabled.
Our traineeships or volunteer positions are open to applicants from abroad.
People planning to come to our city are welcome to contact us to find out about accessibility and services in 15 000 Sabac. We may be able to help with information.
