JSHGDS major role is to assist persons with disabilities physical to acchieve independent self reliance and full community participation.
Our priority is to reach out and respond to the needs of all people with disability in the community
Our traineeships or volunteer positions are open to applicants from abroad.
We may be able to refer disabled persons to wheelchair accessible housing or transportation or other services in our city.

Joy Self Help Group for the Disabled ( JSHGD) was registered with the ministry of gender, sports, culture and social services on 20th of April 2004. It has been established under the act guiding the formation of self help groups to undertake, alleviate initiative as partains disabled and matter affecting them in the community.
The group is the first of its kind in the community. JSHGD is a non political, non partisan and non profit making group. It too applies united nations millenioum goals including non-discrimination in service for the disabled.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR - MR WILLIAM AHANDO
JSHGD is the brainchild of Mr William personally, and improved quadrapleagic. Mr William survived a sporting accident (Athletics High Jumping) in 1994. Having not been insured at that time, the High school that he was in took the responsibilty of taking him to hospital where he was diagonised of Spinal Cord Injury. He was transfered to the Kenyatta National Hospital where he was treated and rehabilitated for two years.
He came to realize that he is not alone in the world of disability as life progressed and thus reduced the anger which many disabled people tend to impliment hence he did not lay many questions upon his Maker-God.
Neutrally this requires a distinct gap of spiritual masterly and regognition that disability should not hinder disabled persons from maximising their full stability. Seeing the now and then need for a focused group that efficiently and effectively handle the whole spectrum of disabled needs, he resolved to the idea of JSHGD and invited the Co-Officials to join up the idea.
William provides leadership in the development, implementation and management of strategies outlined in the community national millenium goals including non-discrimination in service provision for disabled persons.
A retired civil servant in the minstry of Home affairs and National heritage, department of Social Services. Has a technical knowhow and skills pertaining disability and inability in the society. He was moved into joining JSHGD following his proximity association with the myriad of problems faced by the disabled.
A prominent church leader with good reputaion concerning assistance to the disabled. Has good accountancy skills and is currently employed in Prinsal Fish factory in Migori town. He too is disabled and embraces the formation of JSHGD whose outcome, he explains from his own experiences.
Our non governmental, non-profit, organization works at the local level.
We consider ourselves as part of the international Independent Living and Disability Rights Movement.
Our organization is mainly run, controlled and represented by disabled people.
1. REHABILITATION COUNCELLING.
The main purpose of the group is to provide continous support, information, community link and follow up to assist the disabled individuals to catch up with the community and live independent lives.
2. VOCATIONAL COUNCELLING.
JSHGD will continue supporting and encouraging exploration of a variety of vocational alternatives consistant with the disabled individual values, skills, abilities and interests.
3. EMPLOYMENT CONCELLING.
JSHGD will provide assesment job-search and follow up to support disabled indivuduals to the work place.
4. COMMUNITY ADVOCACY.
JSHGD will endevor to assist the community to identify, reduce and eliminate all barriers to full participation including leadership in the areas of prevention.
1. HOME MANAGEMENT REHABILITATION.
After doing research that Disabled people undergo Psycho-social cum Physical denaturalization, JSHGD plans visitations to homes of the disabled people.
2. PRO-HOME REHABILITATION.
This will entail follow-up of disabled people to equip them with psycho-social and material riming me charism. This is because many disabled persons waste and retrogres due to their environmental statues.
3. COUNSELLING FOR THE DISABLED FAMILIES.
Due to physical disabilities and sometimes behavioural state of the disabled, families are often as diverstated as the disabled themselves. With the knwoledge that families are the pillars in rehabilitation chapter, the said families will be equiped with the behavioral skills to play a role.
4. RESEARCH AND OUTREACH.
Iformation available on disabled persons is so dispursed that such data cannot be depended on for planning and implementation of disabled allaviatory undertaking. We update data and information on disables as well as out in the community to find out unaccounted for disabled people and their needs.
5. SENSITIZATION OF THE COMMUNITY.
Stereotypes bias prejudice directed is one form or another to the disabled often leads to iniquity especially productive public and private engagement. Needs therfore arises for the general public to be inducted through sensitization and awareness creation strategies into disability practices.
6. JOY SELF HELP GROUP FOR THE DISABLED SERVICES
In most cases traumatic experience that occurs among the disabled usually brings negative impacts on their psychological well being.
To improve the psychological composition of the victims to its normal state, there is a team of behavioural science experts who help the victims and their families to overcome severe depressions as a result of these misfortunes.
This psychological supports will help the disabled to meet their needs amd sustain them inorder to improve their living standards. The cooncelling support cognisance of the fact that the diabled have no extent mobility, undertake physical duties, lack sexual desire, have no right to inherit ancestral properties and are denied every single right in the family/society. Generally the councelling services that we offer are to inform the disabled and the entire society that disability is not inability.
