| Setu Developmental Intervention Centre Mission Statement: “To work with parents as "equal partners" to bring about positive changes in the lives of persons with disabilities and their families by providing innovative, high quality and cost- effective services, which fill existing gaps in the field of rehabilitation” Activities: Setu presently works in the state of Gujarat in the western part of India. The specific programme details are as: Direct Therapeutic Services: 1. For age group 0 to 5 years • Developmental Assessments: Children are assessed on the attainment of skills and behaviors appropriate to their age groups through observation and examination of developmental milestones in all non-medical areas of development. • Developmental Intervention Services: Inputs are provided in the areas of occupational therapy, speech therapy, special education, behaviour modification, sensory integration, social skills, daily life skills and computer training under one roof. Active mother participation is mandatory in the developmental intervention unit. 2. For age group 6 to 12 years studying in mainstream schools • Functional Educational Assessments: Children are assessed on achievement of educational skills as well as for their therapeutic needs. Based on the needs determined at the time of assessment, management plans for curricular and therapeutic activities are planned. • Remedial Education Services: These services are meant for children with special needs attending mainstream schools. In order to ease the process of integration and to prolong their stay in the school, they are provided with curricular, co-curricular and therapeutic services in a group setting which imitates a classroom situation. 3. For children with Autism age group 6 to 12 years This is for children with moderate to severe degree of autism, to cater to their very distinct needs. The focal areas of intervention include social skills, communication, sensory integration, behaviour modification and occupational therapy. Training: Setu actively trains mothers in the developmental intervention unit to cater to their children’s needs at home. Apart from the intense training during therapeutic sessions, the team of professionals with Setu trains students as faculty for professional courses dealing with rehabilitation and child development. Setu also offers internships and project placements to students from reputed management, design and teacher training institutes as well as international volunteers. Outreach Programmes: Through these programmes, Setu tries to reach out to children in remote areas where screening and assessment services are not available. Apart from the assessments, we train the local staff to implement the intervention programmes. These inputs are provided through assessment camps, talks, participation in awareness campaigns, training organizational staff, etc. Awareness Building: Setu provides information about various Instruments of the Government and information on disabilities on its website. There is also a Yahoo! Group for parents to interact with each other. Setu also has a set of posters of persons with disabilities who have achieved great success in professional world as inspirational stories to advocate for the abilities of its target group. Advocacy: Setu has undertaken the task of establishing bi-directional links between disabilities and MDGs through a research paper to be presented to the UN to ensure that disability is viewed as an indicator of the MDGs and gets its due acknowledgement in the dialogue between states parties and global development agencies. The organization has also been a part of the country level meetings on the proposed UN Convention on Disabilities in India in year 2004. Research: Setu is, at present, conducting a cross sectional study on the Impact of Early intervention keeping in mind parental perspective in order to engage the local and national agencies in a meaningful dialogue and to provide better facilities and services for the group of children it is working for. http://www.setuindia.org/ | 2008-05 |
